Blog #2: Choices, Choices
1. My approach when it comes to food choices is eating less processed and fast food. I'm also trying to drink more water and stay away from sodas. I realize that there's a lot of sugar in sodas and the health problems that go along with eating fast food is what I want to stay away from. I don't want to be on medication and so making better food choices is the route I've taken to prevent high cholesterol and high blood pressure. My priorities are to eat healthier and make better decisions. I'm not a health fanatic but I believe you have to be smarter. Eating at a specific time is not that important to me. I know there are rules about what time you should eat breakfast and how you shouldn't eat dinner after a certain time to lose weight, but I don't get caught in that because I eat when I want to or can. I don't go eating burgers at 10:00 at night but if dinner isn't ready until 8:00 or I don't eat breakfast until 10:00, I feel there's no harm done.
2. In the last few years, I've been trying to eat more fruits and I try to buy some organic items for my kids when their affordable. I've also been eating more nuts and yogurt as well. Again, I'm trying to eat less fast food because I know it's not good for me nor is it healthy. I occasionally eat fried foods. We had switched to turkey bacon instead of pork bacon but my husband and kids prefer pork bacon. I may grill certain foods that before I would have fried like pork chops. Any changes that I make as far as food is initially a challenge but when I think about not wanting to be on medication and my health, I know overall the sacrifice is worth it. That is why I'll buy some organic fruits or vegetables or snacks for my kids.
3.Unfortunately, my refrigerator is pretty bare. We have to go grocery shopping. We typically go on a Sunday to get ready for the work/school week.
(a) The food in my refrigerator, freezer and pantry say that most of the food in my house is for our kids. From the look of things, I buy most things that my children will eat and few things that my husband and I eat.
(b) The grapes, orange juice, eggs, turkey sausage, frozen vegetables and granola bars are healthy. When I eat these items, I know that I'm getting nutrients and vitamins in my body. I know that some of these items aren't processed and are natural and that makes me feel good.
(c) I feel like eating healthier for breakfast is important because it's the first meal of the day and it's what fuels your brain and body. In order to be at your best, you have to eat something nutritious in the morning, or your energy level will be low.
(d) One of the healthiest meals I regularly eat at home is baked chicken, rice & gravy or mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli. This meal makes me feel good and empowered because I'm putting the necessary nutrients in my body to be satisfied.
4.
a. This breakfast has protein, vegetables and fruit. I feel like it has almost every food group and would be fulfilling.
b. I usually have a Chobani Flip yogurt cup and some turkey sausage or bacon, some grits with sausage or bacon or a bowl of cereal. These breakfasts may satisfy a need in the sense that it's food but not a want. I would prefer an omelette or a pecan waffle but I don't have the time to make these things in the morning. They are convenient, quick to prepare but they aren't very filling. By the time I eat my yogurt and sausage, 30 minutes later, I am back hungry.
c. My priorities are to make sure that I my kids lunches are made and they have plenty of food and I have some food for me to eat in the morning, snacks and maybe a lunch for myself which is usually leftovers. I may sometime compromise on not always having a lunch but I have to take my breakfast to work because if not, I never have time to stop and get anything in the morning. My breakfast must have some protein versus fruit which is a nice to have. There's nothing wrong with fruit but it can't be the main component because it's not the most filling. I would still be hungry and not satisfied. A smoothie alone may not qualify nor just a hashbrown. I need a little bit of protein because I feel it completes the meal.
d. I feel like when I eat a 100 calorie cup of yogurt it is the healthiest breakfast I eat. It makes me feel good that I'm not eating anything that I spent a lot of money on, it's not high in calories, it's convenient, provides variety and tasty.
e. Weekend breakfast needs differ a little bit because I have more time to fix heartier breakfasts than what we eat during the week. I might make homemade waffles, biscuits, cheese grits, bacon and sausage all for one breakfast. It's a very comforting time when we can have a breakfast and not be rushed to eat it and prepare it.
5. Breakfast plays a major role because it gets my day started. Without it, I feel lost or hungrier sooner.
a. My ideal breakfast would be an omelette with ham, cheese, mushrooms and spinach, with a side of hashbrowns. I think this breakfast would almost make me forget lunch. I definitely would not want a big lunch. It would be something small like a green salad. Physically, I would be full, satisfied and have more energy. Mentally and emotionally, I would feel great and my spirits would be high, but might have a little brain fog.
b. A non optimal breakfast might be a bowl of cereal. It might affect me differently because it may or may not have the necessary vitamins and nutrients that my body needs. I may not have as much energy and be as alert. I may feel a little bit hungrier when I go to lunch or need to eat sooner because of not being satisfied.
c. When I think of a cold breakfast, I think of a bowl of cereal and a cup of yogurt. There are some brands of cereal made with whole grains that can be filling but I feel like a warm breakfast is more comforting, soothing and satisfying.

ReplyDelete- When you eat the Banquet turkey sausage, how does this leave you feeling?
- Same question for the Nature Valley granola bars--how do you feel after eating these?
Thank you!
When I eat the Banquet turkey sausage, along with my cup of yougurt, I feel complete. Even if I have a packet of instant grits or oatmeal, the turkey sausage rounds out my breakfast. It's as though it's not complete unless I have some protein.
DeleteI've become accustomed to the granola bars. They are a healthy snack for me and is something I enjoy. It is crunchy, a little salty, sweet and it is a perfect little snack. It makes me feel good when I eat them because I'm getting protein and not eating something very unhealthy.
Thanks!
